According to the latest report from Oxford International's Student Global Mobility Index (SGMI), the United States has emerged as the top preference for students from India, with a substantial 69% expressing their interest in studying there. This preference surpasses other popular destinations like the UK (54%), Canada (43%), and Australia (27%), despite concerns about affordability and safety. The report highlights the enduring appeal of prestigious universities as the primary driving force behind Indian students' decisions to study abroad. Specifically, 45% of students cited the quality of education, and 42% emphasized the reputation of universities as crucial factors for choosing the US. Meanwhile, in the UK, 59% of students prioritized education quality, and 61% focused on university reputation. However, for Canada, the ability to combine work and study emerged as the most frequently mentioned motivating factor. Mohit Gambir, managing director of Oxford International Education Services, remarked on the evolving narrative of global student mobility, shaped by a variety of motivations and influencers. The survey, which interviewed prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students from India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Vietnam, found that parents or guardians were the primary influencers for approximately 71% of Indian students, a trend also observed in other countries. Additionally, 44% of Indian students stated that their closest friends were the second most influential factor in their decision-making process.
