"Elon Musk Blasts New US Tariffs on Chinese EVs—What He Said Will Shock You!"
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has voiced his opposition to tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), following a recent increase in levies on such imports. Speaking at a technology conference in Paris via video link, Musk stated, "Neither Tesla nor I asked for these tariffs."
This contrasts with Musk's previous warning in January that Chinese car manufacturers would outcompete global rivals without trade barriers. The recent tariff increase was announced as part of measures to address perceived unfair trade practices and to protect domestic jobs.
Musk remarked, "In fact, I was surprised when they were announced. Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good." He emphasized that Tesla competes effectively in China without the need for tariffs or preferential support, advocating for a market without trade barriers.
The current administration has maintained several tariffs on China that were introduced by the previous administration, while also increasing trade pressure. Recently, it was stated that measures would be taken to prevent any single country from dominating markets for EVs, batteries, computer chips, and essential medical supplies.
In response, China has opposed the tariff increases and announced plans for retaliatory measures. This week, China's Ministry of Commerce launched an anti-dumping investigation into polyoxymethylene copolymer imports, a material widely used in electronics and automobiles, from several regions. This move signals China's intent to retaliate in ongoing trade disputes.
Additionally, there have been indications that China might impose tariffs of up to 25% on large-engine cars imported from certain regions. The China Chamber of Commerce to the EU has reported this potential move, based on information from insiders.
The European Commission, responsible for EU trade policies, has set a 4 July deadline to decide on measures against imports of Chinese-made EVs.
