Cat owners in Derbyshire are being advised to microchip their pets due to a new law. Previously, only dogs were required to be microchipped in England, but as of Monday, this mandate has been extended to cats.
The Derbyshire Cats Protection Centre reported that many of the cats brought to their Ashbourne site over the past year were not microchipped. Helen Wood, the manager of the centre, emphasized the difficulty of reuniting cats with their owners without microchips.
#### 'Chipped for Life'
Under the new law, all cats must be microchipped by the age of 20 weeks, or their owners could face a fine. Ms. Wood described the microchipping process as a "one-off" procedure that is quick and painless.
"Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice," she said. "They can be implanted by our vets very quickly. It doesn’t hurt the cats; it's similar to an injection, and they are then chipped for life."
