In London, the High Court granted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange an opportunity to prolong his battle against extradition to the United States, citing the necessity for additional assurances from the U.S. authorities. The U.S. seeks to try Assange, 52, on 18 charges, predominantly under the Espionage Act, related to WikiLeaks' dissemination of classified U.S. military documents and diplomatic communications. Assange's legal team previously petitioned the court in February, contending that his extradition was politically motivated, and now they have been granted permission to contest Britain's endorsement of his extradition to the U.S.
