Canada witnessed one of its most audacious heists in history as authorities unraveled a complex web of criminal activity involving gold, cash, and firearms at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. The meticulously planned operation, reminiscent of a plot from a crime thriller, unfolded on April 17, 2023, leaving investigators with a multimillion-dollar puzzle to solve.

The heist involved the disappearance of a substantial cache of wealth, including over 22 million Canadian dollars' worth of gold bars and foreign currency from a secure storage facility within the airport. The perpetrators utilized forged paperwork to gain access to the valuable cargo.

On the day of the heist, a cargo container arrived from Zurich, Switzerland, containing 6,600 bars of pure gold and millions in foreign currency. The cargo was destined for secure storage but never made it. Surveillance footage captured the moment the thieves loaded the container onto a truck, which disappeared into the night shortly after.

Central to the heist were individuals with ties to Air Canada, the country's flag carrier, who allegedly facilitated the theft. Among those implicated were current and former employees, including Parmpal Sidhu and Simran Preet Panesar, who used their insider knowledge to execute the operation.

The investigation, spanning international borders, eventually led to significant breakthroughs, with arrests made and warrants issued. It uncovered a complex network of individuals, including those of Indian origin, involved in the crime.

The saga took a dramatic turn when authorities discovered a connection between the stolen gold and an illegal firearms trafficking operation, leading to joint efforts between US and Canadian law enforcement. The arrest of Durante King-Mclean in the US exposed links between the gold thieves and a scheme to smuggle firearms into Canada.

Evidence suggested that the stolen gold had been melted down and transformed to conceal its origins. In total, seven individuals were arrested following a year-long investigation.
