In a recent development, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has confirmed plans for government representatives to meet the 17 Indian crew members aboard an Israel-linked merchant vessel seized by Iran for alleged maritime rule violations.

"I spoke to my Iranian counterpart (Hossein Amir-Abdollahian) last night," Jaishankar stated. "I emphasized the importance of releasing the Indian crew members. We are actively engaging with the Iranian government on this matter."

The vessel was seized near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for Indian ships. Jaishankar emphasized the significance of the region, stating, "It's crucial for us as a large number of our ships pass through it. We have urged both Iran and Israel to exercise restraint."

As part of ongoing efforts, Jaishankar highlighted plans for Indian embassy representatives to meet the crew members firsthand. "Our priority is the safety and swift return of our citizens. I appreciate the responsive approach from the Iranian government," he added.

The seizure occurred shortly after tensions escalated between Iran and Israel, with Israel bombing the Iranian consulate in Damascus. However, international calls for de-escalation have urged both parties to exercise restraint.
